We are here for you.

Please note, there is no evidence that abortion generally has lasting negative effects on women's mental health.

The American Psychological Association task force on mental health and abortion report is here, and a more recent review of the evidence was published in American Psychologist. The National Abortion Federation also has a useful summary of the major studies on abortion and mental health.

If you are having strong feelings after your abortion, it does not mean you will always feel this way. However, some women do need extra support. We are here to help you or to refer you to the right resources.

It is common to have some strong emotions after an abortion. Most women feel relieved, but a woman can be sure she has made the right decision to have an abortion and still feel sad about it. Many women feel loss. Others feel proud to have weathered a difficult situation. Sometimes, women experience a confusing mix of feelings that can be difficult to understand.

A supportive partner, friend, or family member can often help you find ways to sort this out and incorporate your abortion into the rest of your life in a way that makes sense to you. (If they need help understanding how to support you or how to sort out their own feelings, they can visit For Partners, Parents, or Friends for more information.)

But some women don't have a safe person to talk to. Or they feel guilty or angry or sad in a way that feels overwhelming. If you are having feelings you think are disturbing or out of control, there is help available.

See Emotional & Spiritual Concerns for more information and online resources to help you heal and process your feelings after an abortion.
