If you are in the second trimester of pregnancy and you have a negative blood type, you will need a medication called Rhogam to protect the health of future pregnancies
If you have a positive blood type, you will not need this medication
If you do not know your blood type, you can:
1. Check your medical records by consulting with your doctor or checking in your MyChart
2. Get your blood type tested before your appointment by:
1. Go here to purchase the Blood Type Test on the LabCorp website
2. Print out the proof of purchase lab orders
3. Schedule an appointment with the nearest LabCorp location

If you have a negative blood type we can provide the Rhogam medication after your abortion

Restrictions
✔️ You must meet medical safety guidelines. For example, your blood iron levels need to be high enough
✔️ There must be enough room left in the schedule
We recommend wearing loose pants or a skirt or dress and full underwear as you will have a pad after the dilator insertion
What to Expect
At this appointment you will be receiving required pre-abortion services:
Routine medical screening
Ultrasound to establish age and location of pregnancy
Counseling/information session
We will review the different pain management options and assess if you will be able to begin the abortion process at this appointment. If you begin the abortion process at this appointment, we will outline the rest of the steps for the day as follows:
Your abortion will begin today with the doctor inserting cervical dilators. This process typically takes 5 – 10 minutes. This will begin the abortion process by slowly opening your cervix during the day and overnight. One brand of cervical dilator is Dilapan.
You can find more information about how Dilapan works on their website. Dilator insertion can cause bleeding and it is uncommon but possible that your water may break
You may also receive a medication called misoprostol as a part of the preparation of your body for the abortion. This medication comes in the form of pills that will dissolve in your mouth or vagina. They will help to prepare your cervix for the abortion procedure. Some people have cramping, bleeding, nausea, chills and aches like with a fever
🕓 The dilator insertion typically takes 5-10 minutes
💢 You will feel cramping and pressure during the insertion
👀 You will be completely awake and aware during your care
💊 Ibuprofen or Acetominophen can be provided and may reduce the discomfort
Your abortion procedure will be performed the following day and you will receive the time, restrictions, and requirements before you leave. You will choose between two types of pain management described below
Conscious Sedation
💢 You may feel cramping and pressure
🌟 Fentanyl and Versed reduce pain and make you feel deeply relaxed, while still being able to respond to directions
💡 You may not have a clear memory of the procedure
OR
Anesthesia
🌟 Propofol will put you completely asleep during the abortion
💡 You will not remember anything that happened during the procedure
For one week after the abortion, we recommend you take it easy and rest. You will receive a complete explanation of what to expect during and after the abortion before you start the procedure
